The Austin, TX Memorial Bridge is one of three bridges which span over Lady Bird Lake on the south side of Congress Avenue. The original name of the bridge was the Ann W. Richards Congressional Avenue Bridge and it was named after the then-congressional district representative of Texas. When construction of the University of Texas’ Longhorn Dam project was completed in 1963, the bridge was then crossed over the Colorado River where Lady Bird Lake was then impounded. After a flood in 1965, the original bridge was rebuilt using prefabricated sections with a concrete base and a steel framework. It was named after former congresswoman Ann Richards, who had advocated for the dam’s construction as well as being its main supporter during its construction. Find more information here.
The original Congress Avenue bridge connecting the downtown Austin area to downtown San Antonio was built from 1932 until 1965. The original bridge was constructed of wood and consisted of two spans, the longest of which was the east span, which served as a connection point for the University of Texas campus. The west bridge, which was constructed of brick and concrete was designed in a similar way. The bridge was constructed by the California State Railroad under the direction of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. As time progressed, the bridge became a popular place of attraction for the city of Austin as well as for tourists from all over the world.
